Continuing with water, but moving towards energy, today’s question. In the US how much energy is used to move water around? (Not sure how easy this one will be to answer :-)

How does this compare to residential lawn watering? According to the EPA outside residential water usage is about 9 billion gallons per DAY or an astounding 3.2 trillion gallons per yer FAR dwarfing the usage fracking and golf course watering combined. If we want to save water, it helps to start at home.

Moving on with water questions, what it the largest source of fresh water in the world, and for extra credit, how much is there? (hint, it is Great).

Fracking + Golf Courses vs Lawn Watering http://notanumbergifts.com/2014/10/fracking-golf-courses-vs-lawn-watering/ http://notanumbergifts.com/2014/10/fracking-golf-courses-vs-lawn-watering/#comments Sun, 19 Oct 2014 05:44:31 +0000 http://notanumbergifts.com/?p=1015 Since the answer for yesterday’s question, leads to today’s question, here’s the answer to yesterday. In the US which uses more water fracking for oil or watering of golf courses?

This one turns out to be kind of a tie, depending on what estimates you use.

From the US Golf Assoc, the US uses 408 billion gallons of water a day, of which .05% is estimated to be used for watering of golf courses. This is 204,000,000 gallons per day, or 74,460,000,000 (74 billion) gallons/year.

Sourcewatch estimates that fracking uses 70 to 140 billion gallons of water per year, so fracking uses from slightly less than golf course watering to a little less than double depending on your estimate.

Bring us to tomorrow’s question, which uses more residential water lawn watering or fracking and golf course watering combined?
