Not A Number Cards & Gifts Background Radiation Readings keeping an eye on Wallingford background radiation since 2005
A
while back we bought an
old geiger counter at a garage sale, and we always wanted to put it to
some kind of use. So we're going to begin recording the radiation
readings for our store, and recording them here. If we ever see the
readings spike, we will post a general alert on our main page. For now
this is mostly for our own curiosity, and is in no way intended to be a
scientific survey. It is after all a analog gauge, so any averages
posted here really are guesstimates, and who knows if it has ever been
calibrated. All that being said, if we ever see the readings spike and
hold above .05 MR/HR, it will bear further investigation.

Radiation levels still normal
|
| Haven't posted in a while - not much has changed. Still reading at about .01 MR/HR with a few minor busts to .04-.05 MR/HR. Glad to report that the levels haven't changed over the years in this location (front counter of our store )

Low time, no measure, low today
|
Haven't done any measurements for a while. Today actually appears a little light, running at about .008MR/HR. A couple of spikes to .02MR/HR with nothing else special to report.

Same old readings, different day
|
12:17PM The usual readings seem to apply - about .01MR/HR. glad to see that not much has changed since my last reading.

Another day, same boring reading
|
6:12PM
As ususal averaging right around .01MR/HR. Just slightly higher actually. A little spike to .02 holding for about 10 seconds, and then falling back to .01. Seems to be very normal. Won't somebody PLEASE bring me something anything radioactive to measure! (No atomic bombs please :-)

First readings of 2007
|
It's cloudy and rainy here in Seattle. 4:43PM, and the readings are right in the normal range of .01MR/HR, how boring - sigh.
|
September 20, 2006
A little more active
|
1:05PM
Well it's actually a little more active today (but not much), averaging
just over .01MR/HR with some spikes to .04MR/HR. Maybe it's the weather
(doubtful) - it's currently cloudy and rainy in Seattle, and most of
the other readings I've posted have been while it's been sunny - as
Seattle has had an unusually dry summer this year. I guess I'll start
noting the weather when I make my postings.

Meter seems to spike when turned on, quiet as usual
|
I've noticed that the meter I've got seems to spike to about .05 MR/HR,
so I do not include any initial spikes in my averages. Today, as usual,
the background radiation is averaging around .01MR/HR.
I just returned from Burning Man,
and I really wish that I had taken my meter with me, as it would have
been interesting to see if the readings there are much different. I
also would have been curious, as I've been told that they do do some
Uranium prospecting in that area of Nevada. Maybe next year!?

August 22, 2006
Again, just the usual
|
3:05PM
Just the ususal, averaging around .01MR/HR as usual. Not too exciting.
|
August 11, 2006
Someday I hope for something unusual, but I guess that would be bad!
|
4:44PM
As usual the readings are hovering right around .01MR/HR. I almost hope
for something different, just to be unusual, but anything really
different would probably indicate something bad has happened. So I'm
happy to have a nice consistent reading of around .01.
|
August 9, 2006
Just another usual day
|
12:02PM
Started off a little more interesting than usual with a fairly steady
reading of .02MR/HR, but then settle back around the usual .01MR/HR.
Have something that you want to measure for radioactivity? Bring
it in, we'll be happy to measure it.

July 31, 2006
New readings just because
|
7:10PM
Holding steady at .01MR/HR with very little fluctuation. No huge spikes, and no settling to zero either.
|
July 14, 2006
Start low, finish with the normal
|
8:49PM
Started off with a burst to .02MR/HR, then settled back to a very
unusual zero for a period of 10-15 seconds, and then a few bursts,
settling back to around the usual .01MR/HR.
|
July 1, 2006
Sun high, radiation low
|
6;10PM
It's a beautiful day outside, upper 80s, lots of sunshine. As usual the
radiation level here is low, averaging around .01MR/HR. Just like usual.
|
June 23, 2006
New readings for kicks
|
7:45pm
Finally some new readings! As usual readings have settled in around .01MR/HR. A few spikes, but nothing out of the ordinary.
|
May 30, 2006
Latest, still boring
|
Actually not as boring as usual, started off with a spike to .02MR/HR,
and then settled back to a steady .11MR/HR. I'm actually in our stores
back room for this reading, rather than out at our front counter as
usual - maybe there's a difference in the two locations?!
