This page contains the latest news and ramblings about what is going on in the Coolest Block in Wallingford.
Here you will find postings about store specials, and other news about
the block - store openings (we hope, space still available next to us),
closings (gasp, we love our neighbors, and we love being here, so we
hope to post nothing of this sort), and any other news we see fit to
print.

Can you say Iron Chef!??
|
Haven't written much lately - too busy with other stuff - trying to stay in business - so come shop at our store!
Big news for the Coolest Block - Saif and Rachel from Joule restaurant in our block have been invited to be on Iron Chef! They really deserve it, as their food is awesome! I'm not much of a tofu fan, but I had a tofu sandwich there that was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I also had a cold soup made from eggplant, grapes, and pine nuts - sound gross, but this was also one of the tastiest things I've ever had. Best of luck to them on Iron Chef!
I should also note that Maria Hines from Tilth restaurant down the street from us was also recently on Iron Chef. We don't know the results yet, but the word we hear is that she did Seattle proud. So if you want world class food in Seattle, Wallingford is a great neighborhood to come to. There are a couple of other restaurants/chiefs, who although they may not be invited on Iron Chief, provide a "World Class" meal - Dustin at Art of the Table, and David at Perche No rank right up there in my opinion.

Fainting Goat opens!
|
Finally, a new business has opened next to us, in the old Juice Goddess space. A big welcome from the Coolest block to Fainting Goat Gelato, making some delicious gelato in 18 differerent rotating flavors. And who new that there could be vegan gelato (sorbetto, I think is what they called it)? Every bit as delicious as regular gelato, yet totally vegan. We really like the lemon!
They are part of WallingfordSaves so remember to show their receipts (or in many cases, just their cups) for discounts around the neighborhood.

Haven't posted in a while Big Changes
|
| Big news for the Coolest Block. A new gelatto place is opening in the space of the old Juice Goddess. We welcome a new business to the block as that space has been empty for over a year. We also have a financial analyst on the corner now. I 'm working on keeping this page more updated; although right now I'm more focused on keeping Not A Number in business. So come in and buy things you don't need, with money you don't have, support the Coolest Block economy

Bee Well and Palmyra both close - welcome to Joule
|
Not A Number is sad to note that Bee Well Vitamin Shoppe and Palmyra restaurant are both closed. It is still unclear what is going to go into the Bee Well space, but Palmyra restaurant has reopened as the the wildly acclaimed Joule. Joule has been drawing rave reviews from most of the local press (including the Seattle Times), and the noted Seattle Chief Tom Douglas has been seen dining there. If you want to try a meal that is exotic and delicious we suggest you check it out.

Openings and closings on the Coolest Block
|
Big changes on the Coolest Block! First the sad/bad news. We are very sad that Palmrya restaurant has closed! The owner had an opportunity that he couldn't pass up. We wish him and his family much success with whatever he does next, and we hope that he will come back to visit the Coolest Block once and a while. In other sad news, Bee Well Vitamin Shoppe is also closing. All of this is very sad news to us at Not A Number, as we had wonderful relationships with both owners. On a more positive note, Palmrya will turn into a Korean restaurant, and is set to open within the next month or so. Bee Well and it's neighboring business Juice Goddess have been bought be new owners, who intend to expand Juice Goddess and possibly offer other services in the former Bee Well space. We look forward to working with the owners of these new businesses in the Coolest Block.

Open Books - one of only two in the US!
|
Just a quick note of congratulations to Open Books, which was recently featured in an article in the Seattle P-I. They are one of only two bookstores in the entire US that are dedicated to poetry. When you need a verse, this a good place to open your purse (oh that's bad! Apologies).
Just found out that Smash Wine Bar was mentioned in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine as a bar to check out in Seattle. Congratulations to them also!
Just another reason to spend some time in Wallingford!

So cool the fire dept. comes just to visit!
|
The Coolest Block is so cool that fireman come just to visit. Not A Number was pleased to have four of the Seattle Fire Dept. come in for a visit. At first we thought they might be in for an inspection, but no, they just happened to be out and about, and stopped in to check out the wall of stickers. Hopefully none of the neighbors where freaked out by the site of a fire truck parked on the block!
Many thanks to them for stopping in, and risking their lives to help us all in times of emergency!

New employee, welcome Number 7, good-bye 13
|
Not A Number is sad to report the sudden departure of Steph, Number 13. It happened suddenly, on one of the worst days of the year. We had a huge flood, the weather was horrible, and everybody's nerves where frayed. We wish her much success with whatever she is doing now!
We are pleased to have Number 7, Ben, now filling in part-time. Welcome to the group Number 7!

Number Six on TV, Beso del Sol closes
|
Not A Number Cards & Gifts was very pleased to have their very own founder, Number Six, interviewed for the Seattle channel. He was talking about his program WallingfordSaves, which encourages local residents to shop in the area.
We are VERY, VERY disappointed to report that one of our favorite restaurants, Beso del Sol has closed. Though not in the Coolest Block, they were a very cool longtime resident of the neighborhood, and they will be missed. We wish all of them and their staff the best of luck with whatever life brings them in the future!
This is a case, once again, of large scale development making changes that a smaller local neighborhood might not want. In this case the property is being re-developed by the new owner, Mastro Properties, who decided that there were better ways to make money with the space. They may be right, but we will certainly mourn the loss of Beso! They had been in that location for 20+ years.

Weather, weather, weather
|
Of course the big news for the Coolest Block is Windstorm 06, the storm that seemed to knock out most of the power in Seattle. We in the NW corner of the Coolest Block were lucky in that our power did not go out, while many places around us where w/o power - most of 45th on the North side was dark. It was a very unusual sight to see 45th so dark.
One of the largest trees by Wallingford Center was knocked over, covering 45th. and balancing on the bus trolley lines.

Not A Number Too, finally open!
|
After a several week delay, Not A Number is pleased to announce that their new annex, Not A Number Too, located in the store front right next to their current location is now open. It is still a work in progress, so they ask that you pardon their dust. They plan to expand their book and political section. So if you are in the neighborhood drop in check out the new addition, which can be entered through the current store location.

Dirt Gardens Planted!
|
The lovely dirt gardens (the big dirt areas that existed on many of the blocks in Wallingford, due to the addition of Curb Bulbs) have finally been planted!! Thanks to the City of Seattle, our own Head Cheese/Co-President of the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce, and the some members of the Wallingford Community Council for organizing the planting of these bare areas.
Just remember YOU can have a say in the traffic and pedestrian changes that happen in the Wallingford neighborhood. The Curb Bulbs (the areas with the now planted strip), which are SUPPOSED to make crossing 45th street easier, where brought to you via the efforts of the Wallingford Community Council. Since we (Not A Number Cards & Gifts) are right on the street by one of these Curb Bulbs, our observation is that they have not seemed to do much to make crossing 45th easier. People still end up waiting as cars go by. Putting in Curb Bulbs took away parking spaces, as well the ability to use 45th as a 4 lane street if needed.
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is considering putting in a road diet (i.e. narrowing the road to two lanes with a median in the middle) on Stone Way. If you have any thoughts this, let SDOT know.

It was bound to happen...
|
Well most of the businesses in the block have been robbed, and we had been skipped, we guess it was only a matter of time. Last night Not A Number was robbed. Somebody climbed through the transom and carried off our cash drawer and a cash box. The cash register drawer was recovered later thanks to an alert customer.
Curses to the crooks! That's the second time in the last 3 months that a nice Sunday off has been ruined by thieves.
